Climate change adaptation: seven local areas honoured by the Life ARTISAN project

Seven local areas have been named winners of the third edition of the climate change adaptation awards, under the European Life ARTISAN project, ADEME announced on 7 July 2026.
The Life ARTISAN project aims to promote nature-based solutions as levers for adapting to climate change. This approach draws on ecosystems rather than on purely engineered structures.
In practical terms, this may mean removing hard surfacing from urban soils to limit run-off, restoring wetlands that act as a buffer during floods, or developing vegetation in cities to mitigate heat islands.
These solutions have an often underestimated economic benefit: they combine several benefits — thermal regulation, water management, biodiversity, quality of life — where an engineered structure generally serves a single function.
Adaptation is becoming a direct issue for energy infrastructure, as illustrated by the grid reinforcement programmes undertaken in response to heatwaves and wildfires.
