EDF creates FINABe, an international advisory committee on low-carbon financing
Announced on 10 March 2026, this body is to inform financing models for long-term energy infrastructure.
On 10 March 2026, EDF announced the creation of the international advisory committee FINABe, for Financing and Investing in Nuclear And Beyond.
The purpose of this body addresses a structural difficulty: low-carbon energy infrastructure — nuclear reactors, offshore wind farms, grids — is characterised by very high upfront investment costs and depreciation periods of several decades.
This financial profile sits poorly with short-term market signals alone. The price of electricity on wholesale markets, volatile and linked to the marginal costs of generation, is not enough to underpin investment decisions over thirty or sixty years.
The responses developed in recent years combine several instruments: contracts for difference, production allocation contracts, public guarantees and risk-sharing mechanisms between generators and industrial consumers.
The issue goes beyond nuclear: financing the reinforcement of transmission and distribution grids, for which RTE plans €94 billion by 2040, raises the same long-term problem.
