AI Gigafactory: a French consortium banks on low-carbon electricity

Announced on 21 May 2026, the AION consortium brings together eight players around a bid for the European programme.

On 21 May 2026, Ardian, Artefact, Bull, Capgemini, the EDF group, the iliad Group, Orange and Scaleway announced the formation of the AION consortium, intended to carry a French bid under the European AI Gigafactories programme.

The reasoning is explicit: in the coming years, the competitiveness of European economies will depend directly on their ability to access massive computing power that is available, competitive and sovereign.

The consortium brings together expertise covering the entire value chain: supercomputers, microprocessors, quantum computing solutions, critical infrastructure, energy expertise, sovereign cloud and AI platforms, and data centre development and operation.

It draws on a wider ecosystem of technological, academic and industrial partners, including Crédit Agricole, Equans, GENCI, Hugging Face, INRIA, Nokia, Schneider Electric, SiPearl and Sopra Steria.

The energy argument is central to the bid: France has abundant, competitive and low-carbon electricity thanks to a mainly nuclear and hydro mix, robust digital infrastructure and recognised expertise in data centres.
