Réseau Marseille: €250 million to cut outage time from 75 to 40 minutes per year

Launched on 30 October 2025, this five-year programme responds to the effects of heatwaves on a dense urban grid.

On 30 October 2025, Enedis launched the "Réseau Marseille" programme, a €250 million investment and maintenance plan rolled out over five years, from 2025 to 2030.

The programme aims to accelerate the modernisation of the public distribution grid in France's second-largest city around three priorities: strengthening its resilience to the effects of climate change, supporting the decarbonisation of transport — notably maritime — and supporting urban and industrial development.

The stated ambition is to bring power outage times in the metropolitan area down to national standards by 2030, i.e. 40 minutes per year on average. That figure is currently estimated at around 75 minutes in Marseille.

This gap is explained in particular by heatwave episodes, which affect the grid in a dense urban environment. High temperatures put underground cables under strain and reduce their transfer capacity.

Replacing ageing sections of the grid is one of the key levers of this resilience.

The Marseille case foreshadows a general question: adapting electrical infrastructure to lastingly hotter summers is becoming an investment item in its own right.
