Synthetic aviation fuels: 150 MW of nuclear capacity allocated to the Fos-sur-Mer project

Signed on 16 July 2026, this 10-year contract supports a site producing 75,000 tonnes of e-SAF per year from 2032.

On 16 July 2026, EDF and H4 Marseille Fos, a French-German company developing a synthetic fuel production site at Fos-sur-Mer, announced the signature of a nuclear production allocation contract.

The contract provides for the allocation of a share of around 150 MW of the operating nuclear fleet's capacity for a term of ten years, from the commissioning of the site scheduled for 2032, with a balanced sharing of risks and benefits.

Ultimately, the project will require around 2.8 TWh of electricity per year. From 2032, H4 Marseille Fos will produce 75,000 tonnes per year of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel, or e-SAF, using Methanol-to-Jet technology.

These fuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 84% compared with fossil kerosene, i.e. around 240,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent avoided each year.

Launched in 2025, the project represents €1.6 billion of investment in France and the creation of 165 direct jobs. It contributes to the European targets of blending 10% e-SAF into aviation fuels by 2040, set by the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation.

Electricity accounts for close to a third of the total cost of producing e-SAF, which makes access to competitive, low-carbon electricity a decisive economic lever.
