ArcelorMittal secures its low-carbon electricity for 18 years with EDF
Signed on 26 December 2025 and announced on 6 January 2026, this nuclear production allocation contract covers the steelmaker's French sites.
On 26 December 2025, ArcelorMittal and EDF signed a Nuclear Production Allocation Contract (CAPN) for the steelmaker's French sites, announced on 6 January 2026.
This contract follows the letter of intent signed in January 2024. EDF will allocate to ArcelorMittal a share of the capacity of its operating nuclear fleet, for a term of 18 years. First deliveries began on 1 January 2026.
The CAPN mechanism is distinctive: it is not a conventional fixed-price supply contract, but the allocation of a fraction of a fleet's output, with risks and benefits shared on the volumes actually generated. Operation of the assets remains EDF's sole responsibility.
For the industrial firm, the benefit is to secure a long-term supply of competitive low-carbon electricity — a decisive factor for the future competitiveness of steel produced in France.
This type of contract is part of the post-ARENH landscape: since the end of the regulated access scheme on 1 January 2026, large consumers have been negotiating long-term contracts backed by nuclear generation directly.
