International cooperation: the CRE supports the Burundian regulator

On 6 July 2026, the French Energy Regulatory Commission continued its support for AREEN, the Burundian energy sector regulator, with a study mission to Ghana.
This type of cooperation between regulators meets a specific need: building a credible regulatory framework is a precondition for investment in energy infrastructure, particularly in order to attract international financing.
The choice of Ghana as the study setting is not incidental: the country has developed significant experience in tariff regulation and rural electrification, in a context closer to Burundi's than European models are.
The topics addressed in these exchanges cover questions common to all power systems: methods for setting grid tariffs, regulation of natural monopolies, quality of service and the integration of independent power producers.
The rise of decentralised renewables and storage solutions adds a new dimension, in systems where supply reliability remains the primary concern.
