EDF and the European Investment Bank sign a financing contract
Announced on 5 September 2025, this agreement illustrates the role of European public financing in the energy transition.
On 5 September 2025, EDF and the European Investment Bank announced the signature of a financing contract.
The EIB is the European Union's bank, owned by the member states. It finances infrastructure projects on favourable terms, with a stated priority for climate action and the energy transition.
Its involvement addresses a characteristic of energy investment: its depreciation period, often longer than private financial markets are spontaneously willing to cover. Long maturities at competitive rates correspondingly reduce the full cost of projects.
This financing cost feeds directly through to the tariffs borne by consumers: for highly capital-intensive infrastructure, the interest rate often weighs more heavily than operating costs.
The issue is all the more sensitive given that investment needs are increasing simultaneously in generation, transmission grids and distribution grids.
