Grand Paris Express: 600 MW and 400 km of cables to power the new lines

On 6 July 2026, Enedis set out details of the connection of the Grand Paris Express lines to the public electricity distribution grid, a choice that sets them apart from the historic Paris metro lines, which are mostly supplied by a dedicated network.
Carried out with the Société des grands projets, this choice makes it possible to meet larger electricity requirements, linked to the automation and operation of the lines, the many items of equipment in the stations and the expected passenger numbers.
It also limits the impact of the works on local residents: a single connection first supplies the construction sites and the tunnel boring machines, then the stations, equipment and lines on a lasting basis. This approach avoids repeated returns to the same site.
In the Île-de-France region, the public distribution grid has an availability rate of 99.99%. Its meshed structure offers several supply options and helps secure future operation in the event of an incident.
In total, around 250 connections will be carried out for site facilities and tunnel boring machines. Enedis has already committed €122 million of investment, out of a planned total of €180 million co-financed with the Société des grands projets.
The project will mobilise a target capacity of 600 MW, the equivalent of the needs of a city of several hundred thousand inhabitants, with 400 km of medium-voltage cables and the connection of 140 substations to supply more than 60 stations and 3 maintenance centres.
